Number two, and what better place to but a cache but under the magnificent Batman Bridge - Batman’s offsider was Robin, he was always with Batman, Robin’s Crossing, get it? OK so not the most obvious cache name around, but I didn’t want to go with something plain like “Under the Bridge”, so I tried to think cryptic (shrug).
Yes I know I said once a week, well it hasn’t happened, but I’m not putting it down to procrastination this time. I’ve simply been far too busy to bother with this. My dear old Dad has just moved over here and we’ve been looking for a house for him to live in, this on top of the fact that since our greedy landlords have seen fit to increase our rent by $50 a week we have been looking for a house ourselves. Busy, busy, busy, we’ve seen quite a few houses between us, some we could see ourselves living in, some just needed far too much work, work we neither have the time or money to complete. One thing that hit us straight away was how much the market has shot up in the past 6 years since we moved to Tassie, houses that were selling for $140,000 to $160,000 are now on the market for $350,000 to $399,000 - that’s quite a rise.
The hunt is still on in the search for a house for my Dad, but the good news is Bastvet and I have finally found a humble little abode that we can relax and read our mortgage statements in. We put an offer on it last Friday, it was accepted by the owners and if all goes well with the building inspection and approval of finance we should be joining the stressed millions paying off the banks for the next goodness knows how many years.
Where is it? I don’t want to jinx anything at this stage, so I’ll let you know when we move in, I can tell you that a certain group of cachers viewed the house some years ago when they were looking for a house, they found something else and let this one pass - so I’m not sure what’s more depressing, being a couple hundred g’s in debt, or living in the house that CraigRat rejected ![]()

Trivia - Probably the first placement of a scented candle in a Tasmanian cache - sorry CraigRat!!
My first cache placement, I remember it as if it was yesterday - actually I don’t, it’s all very fuzzy now, but it seemed like a neat way to start this short series on my cache placements!
A schedule and discipline is what I need and I’ve given myself one. Over the next few weeks, probably Friday night I will write a post on one of my cache placements, starting with the first cache I placed and working through to the present. I haven’t placed a lot of caches, but I’ll work through them one by one, explaining my motivation for the placement, some history, problems I encountered, if I was happy with it and if I wasn’t, why. Along the way I’m guessing you will get an insight into what I get out of caching and why I haven’t chucked in the towel yet.
Well it’s been a long time since I’ve placed a cache; one of my own anyway, I’ve placed a few movables in the past year or so - I have my reasons for not placing any new caches, but I won’t bore you with them right now.
I’ve had a cache in my backpack for sometime waiting for the right spot. A few weeks ago CraigRat and I ventured to the north-east and while we were there I checked out a lookout that seemed like a potential hiding spot, but it turned out to be a manned fire spotters lookout. Still, we were invited to the top of the tower by the fire spotter and learned the ins and outs of fire spotting, it was a very educational visit, even if I didn’t get to hide the cache!
Today CraigRat had to dash off to a cache placement he made a couple of weeks ago to do some maintenance and on the way back we called in at Liawenee. Now Liawenee might not seem like the best place to hide a cache, but I’ve always been fascinated by it’s barren landscape and the fact it is one of the coldest places in Tassie. In the past with few cachers in the state, a cache there would probably never be found and therefore would be a waste of time, but now we have a very active community of cachers I thought the time might be right, especially given there are other caches in the area now.
But rather than throwing it out the window and jotting down the co-ordinates - taking into account the weight of the cache, speed of the vehicle, number of Echidnas on the road and the windage - I wanted to put it somewhere interesting, but where in Liawenee?? I think I found a spot, well it certainly had CraigRat and I baffled, we know what it was we parked near, but we have no idea why or by whom, hence the name of the cache What the? aka WTF?
Not sure a blog is for me. I started it mainly because our parents were on the other side of the country and it was a good way to show them what is happening here in Tassie, but that dribbled off quickly and at any rate they are all over here now, or at least will be when my Dad gets here just before Christmas - so that’s the family side of things done for. The caching side of it, well I guess I was just to justify the fact I needed a use for my fancy domain - hardly a good reason to have a blog.
Where to now, well I’ve been thinking about it and I think I’ll stick with it, I see it as therapy for my procrastination and if you check out the posts this year you’ll see it’s not working very well - I need to make it work. Even if no one reads it, I need to force myself into some form of schedule, some discipline.
So please forgive me while I bore you with cache reviews, throw opinions around and generally make a nuisance of myself - I’ll promise to chuck in the odd photo of Thomas or Janet to keep you amused - what a deal!
It’s been an interesting 8 months since the last post, a lot has happened. But where to start - might as well continue where I left off - Janet first.
The last time she was only a couple hundred grams and still reasonably frail. Now she is a 3 kg. ball of constant activity and mischief. The mischief comes in many forms, in fact I just got an ICQ from Basvet to say Janet has just helped herself to a very expensive bag of dog food at the clinic, apparently it was fine one minute, they turned their back to clean out a cage, went back into the storeroom and the bag all of a sudden had a kitten sized hole in it - with a kitten in the hole. The bag should have gone back to the distributers due to a supply mixup, so Thomas now has a large bag of bland but expensive ULTRA allergen free food to go through - it would be just like him to take a dislike to it!
Click the eyes for a quick catch up on her progress.
Just trying out a WordPress plugin I came across today called WP LightboxJS. Clicking on the image opens a larger version of the image over the top of the WordPress page - I think it’s tidy, you just click the image to close it, or alternatively you can press the ‘x’ key on your keyboard. It’s kind of like a pop up window but not one.
The image is from our Christmas Blooper Reel, Abigail was playing with the Chickenfeed antlers and put them on Thomas’ back, he walked around for ages not really caring what he had hanging off his back. It all came to a screeching halt when Yoda decided she would take the freak on and chased him around the house, antlers and all - it really was a sight to see, a 16 year old tabby chasing a whimpy French Bulldog wearing antlers with bells and Ho Ho written all over them - you had to be there
Yes we have another one. Not content in fighting what seems like a losing battle with Derek - by the way, as can be seen from his Chistmas photo he’s still struggling along. We now have Janet to deal with - well not me, I subscribe to the “only good cat is a flat cat” theory. But the girls are running shifts feeding little Janet who was found at the Tailrace Park by one of our clients. At roughly 12 days old and only 190 grams (currently 330 grams) when she was handed in she needs lots of attention, with 4 to 6 hourly feeds and assistance in going to the kitty potty. Rumour has it that when old enough she will become a “clinic cat”, pulling clients into line and telling them who is boss - bit hard to imagine at the moment though isn’t it? Even I’ve been heard to mumble something like “Look what she just did, oh how cute” - now where are those grumpy pants.
